philadelphia haunted penitentiary
Fun cheap stuff in Philadelphia?

I’m going to Philly this weekend and I’m looking for some fun things to do other than the tourist destinations. Suggestions? Also is the Eastern State Penitentiary tour worth it? How about the Haunted House? Thanks.

I would definately say that the Eastern State Penn tour is worth it. Also i would reccomend the audio tour because otherwise you will not know the significance of what you are looking at. It is a VERY cool place.

Other cheap things to do (let’s go with FREE!):
If you are near center city, a little known attraction is the observatory deck atop city hall. The observatory deck is directly under the William Penn stautue. You can actually look up through an open window at him and really get a sense of how big he is. I have taken people that grew up in Philly there and they never knew it existed. It is free and the hours are Mon.-Fri. from 9:30 am-4:30 pm with tours occuring every 15 minutes (no weekends). So the hours are a little funny but it is WELL worth it if your schedule permits it.

Also since you will be in the area, another small known attraction is the Wanamaker Organ in Lord and Taylor. Lord and Taylor is kaddy corner across the street from city hall on the southeast corner. The organ is a massive 30,000-pipe organ which has been said to be the largest in the world. They have daily (FREE!) shows at noon and 5pm (7pm on Wednesday). There is a nice Café Americanstyle that overlooks the scene from a third floor terrace.

Admission to the Liberty Bell Center is free, and open from 9 to 5 daily. It is located on Market Street between 5th and 6th Streets. Market street is the street that runs directly east/west out from city hall. So it is about 10 blocks east of city hall.

Independence hall is right across the street (one street south on Chestnut Street between 5th and 6th streets) from the liberty bell and is also FREE! If you are standing looking at the liberty bell inside the facility (you’d be looking south) independence hall is right behind it! It is open daily, however, times and hours vary each season. each guest needs a timed ticket with a specific date and time for tours from March through December. Tickets are available beginning at 8:30 a.m., and are given on a first come, first served basis.

You can always run up the steps (from the Rocky movie) in front of the Art museum directly North West from city hall down Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The view from the top is really nice and a perfect picture opportunity.
