Spine-tingling Thrills in Haunted York
If you enjoy being led through darkened streets by a scary man who, occasionally, turns around to frighten you senseless, then York is the city for you. The scene just described isn’t sinister in any way – well, perhaps one or two – but it is a common one for the city of York, a location in the north of England that is known for being helplessly haunted.
Built on a medieval past filled with dark happenings and foul play around every corner, York has a reputation for having more than one skeleton in the closet – or more than one Roman soldier, as you’ll find out when you visit the Treasurer’s House and discover the tale of the ghostly Roman soldiers who marched through the floor of one basement room, terrifying a hapless onlooker who was in the room doing some repair work at the time.
One of the best ways for finding out about York’s spookier side is to go on one of the many ghost walks populating the city. These ghost tours take you through the streets of York with an enigmatic – and often somewhat creepy – guide who will regale you with terrifying stories of York’s past and present, filled with ghosts, devils and dire happenings, letting you not only enjoy a spine-chilling storytelling session, but also enjoy learning a huge amount about this city’s fascinating past.
Ghost walks are a fantastic way to spend an evening, especially if you’re in York for several nights. This gives you the opportunity to go on several of these exciting ventures, hearing new stories with new styles and all of that exercise from walking around, coupled with your bravery for going along, will make you feel more than justified in that rewarding drink at a York pub afterwards.
You might discover the horrifying past about Clifford’s Tower, where a massacre took place nearly 1000 years ago, or hear the spooky story of a demonic dog that roams the streets at night time – tales which means many York hotels have their bedroom doors barricaded by concerned tourists.
Whatever side of York’s past you choose to discover, you’ll certainly find that this small, self-contained city has far more to it than meets the eye. York’s past remains with it to the day, whether it’s in the Gothic York Minster, the medieval city walls or on one of its enigmatic ghost tours roaming the streets every night – just don’t say you weren’t warned.
