The Clewiston Inn was built in 1938. It’s set in the heart of Clewiston, which is the home of US Sugar Corporation. The historic hotel has been a rest stop for all kinds of visitors including field workers for US Sugar and even President Herbert Hoover. The hotel’s general manager, Christa Hill, knows all of the inn’s secrets. She’s been working there since she graduated from high school. Christa claims the place is haunted. For example, frequently, guests hear strange noises coming from the kitchen. They hear the sounds of pots and pans banging during late hours of the night when the staff has gone home from work. Christa, herself, has also had strange encounters in the hotel. She’s heard her name called when no one’s around. She’s felt her hair pulled. Christa Hill says the most bizarre experience in the hotel happened after a long-term guest died from a heart attack in the room where she lived. Because the woman died in there, Christa says the hotel had to strip the furniture, the carpet and the wires from the room. Even with the wiring gone, the staff still received calls from the room on the switchboard. The reputation of the Clewiston Inn has spread. Over the years, Christa has allowed many different ghost hunting groups to check out the hotel. Recently, the Florida Paranormal Research Team investigated. The group is based out of Fort Myers. The original “Chucky,” Robert the Doll, has been said to
resemble everything from Michael Jackson to Curious George.
The East Martello Museum on South Roosevelt Boulevard (next
to the airport) is Robert’s permanent home where he sits on
display for those who dare to visit. On our nightly tours,
we visit Robert’s original home at The Artist House Bed &
Breakfast where he lived with his owner Gene Otto and we
visit Robert’s annual temporary home at the historic Customs
House Museum. Robert was said to have been given to Gene
by a Bahamian girl whose exact relation to the family remains
one of Robert’s many mysteries. Many believe the girl was the
daughter of ill-treated servants of the Otto family. Speculation
as to his creation include that the doll contains a crystal or
was made much like a voodoo doll, thereby creating his evil
entity. Whatever his method of creation, Robert is possessed
and his ongoing activities continue to be reported to us.
Robert is one of our most popular tales and many of our
tour customers visit Robert at East Martello for themselves.
One of Robert’s favorite activites is to prevent his photo
from being taken. Visitors have reported a variety of camera
malfunctions and Robert’s favorite trick is to black out his
own photo, while leaving the remaining film unharmed. He
frequently creates electric and electronic fluctuations and has
been said to move his toy lion from one knee to the other
