Tim Hecker
Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Tim Hecker is an ambient sound artist who has released his records on a number of various respected ambient electronica record labels. His debut, “Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again” was released in 2001 and mixes a lot of digital signal processing with glitchy and rock crescendo sounds. His work is noted for its melodies and his use of various suites. His released more album to critical acclaim including his most recent, 2009’s “An Imaginary Country” on the famed Kranky record label.
Aphex Twin
There hasn’t been a more critically acclaimed album of ambient music since Brian Eno’s “Music For Airports” until Aphex Twin’s “Selected Ambient Works 85–92.” Quite possibly the album that created the “ambient techno” genre, Richard D. James, the sole creative force behind Aphex Twin had been dabbling in club DJ music in late 1980s but was interested in new music techniques and rhythm oriented, with more speed and percussion than early ambient music. Originally recorded onto cassette the album has a sort of lo fidelity sound, making it sound old, weathered and mysterious. Numerous lists have concluded that it is one of the most important electronic recordings of recent years, with it being listed in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die” and #92 on NME’s 100 Best Albums poll. Aphex Twin would go on to make a sequel to the album but largely focused his attention on the drum and bass genre and more harsh experimental electronica music.
